Rules & Etiquette
Whether you're visiting for the first time or the hundredth, these simple rules and etiquette tips help keep training safe, respectful and fun for everyone.
Gym Rules & Etiquette
Respect Comes First
- Show respect to instructors, teammates, and visitors—on and off the mats.
- Always greet your training partners and thank them after rolling.
- Follow the instructor’s lead; don’t talk or drill when the coach is demonstrating.
Take Care of Your Training Partners
- This is not a fight—train to help each other grow.
- Tap early, tap often, and always respect your partner’s tap.
- Roll with control—especially with lower belts or smaller partners.
- No slamming or overly aggressive behavior. If you're unsure, ask.
Arrive Clean and Ready to Train
- Come to class showered, with trimmed nails and clean gear.
- No shoes on the mats—ever.
- Wear shoes or flip-flops off the mats—especially to the bathroom.
- If you're sick, have open wounds or a skin infection stay at home. No exceptions.
- Wash your gi, rashguard, and belt after every class.
- Do not train under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any impairing substance.
Banned Techniques & Safety
- No kani basami (scissor takedown) – it’s dangerous and not allowed under any circumstances.
- No heel hooks or twisting leg locks in gi class.
- No neck cranks, spinal locks, or slamming out of submissions.
- No jumping guard unless explicitly allowed by the instructor.
